I'm attempting to boot gentoo off a firewire hard drive on my dual 2ghz G5. I made sure to compile in support for sbp2 for the firewire drive, and support for the Macintosh partition format. The kernel loads fine all up until mounting root. It's unable to find /dev/sdc4 (which is what I configured it as in yaboot). When running the live CD, my two internal drives (which Im not touching) show as sda and sdb, the firewire drive loads as sdc. So my question is, is my problem within yaboot config specifically /dev/sdc changing or is the problem involving the kernel or elsewhere?

As long as the devices are loaded in the same order, that's probably not it. I'd guess that the device nodes aren't created yet. You can follow the procedure in this post for more help:

Specifically, look at the script to create device nodes.
