I like the PPC architecture, so I was considering (just vaguely considering, no specific plan yet) getting a ppc machine.

What I was wondering was: except apple (and it looks they wont be doing it for so long), who makes ppc machines? or can you find individual components and build a machine yourself just like in the x86 world?

I think I heard of something called Pegasus. I think a company called Daystar made a few in the '90s. Not sure if they're the same ones that made daystar processor upgrade cards for Apple computers. Building your own ppc will probably cost more than getting one from Apple.

From a quick glance it looks like the pegasos is a larger box with more expandability options. With my Mini I can't add in or upgrade anything (well I did put a 7200rpm drive in and boost it to 1G memory) It has 1Gig memory max, only a 100Mbit ethernet card, dvd burner, 32M graphics card, USB2 and Firewire, bluetooth and wireless that won't work with linux... but it does run Tiger!

There are a few software packages that I can't get for the PPC platform but nothing that I couldn't find a suitable replacement for. The best thing about the mini is its size... 6"x6"x2" and the fact that its almost totally silent.

You forget that the Pegasos OpenBox is the more supported computer avaiable under gentoo, because there are a big collaboration between the pegasos develop team and the gentoo one. They give us all the specifications we need, and there are some gentoo developers that work in pegasos development team too (genesi).

If I would have money I will buy one  .
