PostPosted: Wed Jun 22, 2005 1:16 am    Post subject: Kernel panic on boot (PPC) Reply with quote

I'm performing my first Gentoo installation on an Apple machine. I'm getting kernel panics on boot, woe is me.

I've done some digging here and while a panic with this error is pretty common, none of the fixes mentioned in the various threads has helped me any:

Kernel panic message is as below:

Code:
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

Various reasons mentioned elsewhere include no Mac partition support, HFS support or your chosen filesystem support. All were added from the off.

mac-fdisk -l /dev/hda, for reference:

Moved from Installing Gentoo to Gentoo on PPC.

Nope

Code:

CONFIG_EXT2_FS=y

#
# ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support
#
CONFIG_IDE=y
# CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDE is not set
# CONFIG_BLK_DEV_HD_ONLY is not set
# CONFIG_BLK_DEV_HD is not set

You don't have support for your IDE controller. Since you didn't say what kind of mac, I'll just suggest that you enable the powermac IDE. Make sure that you have IDE disks enabled as well. Tell us what kind of mac you've got and I'll be a little more specific.

How do I determine my notebook model? Apple seem somewhat obtuse on this point.

I compiled in generic PPC IDE support, to the same effect. Full kernel panic message:

Code:
VFS: Cannot open root device "hda13" or unknown block(0,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on
unknown-block(0,0)

Try saying Yes to all IDE chipsets in kernel configuration.

That's not something I like doing:

Code:
drivers/built-in.o(.init.text.0xa0dB): In function 'init_hwif_amd74xx':
: undefined reference to 'pci_get_legacy_ide_irq'
make: *** [.tmp_vmlinux1] Error 1

Heh. The AMD/Nvidia entry produced the above.

As for my problem, enabling all drive entries produced no change. Exact same kernel panic.

Is udev emerged? I seem to recall that this is also a simptom of not having udev or devfs.

Indeed it is. I re-emerged, to be on the safe side.

If genkernel is used and initrd that it generates is not used, the same error can show up.

Well, I looked up your UniNorth (Apple Pangea) and it looks like you have an iBook.

You'll need to make sure that these items are selected in your config for your IDE controller to work. I know that you're not using genkernel because the config you provided isn't configured like the genkernel/LiveCD config.

Code:

<*> ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support
<*>   Enhanced IDE/MFM/RLL disk/cdrom/tape/floppy support
<*>     Include IDE/ATA-2 DISK support
<*>     Include IDE/ATAPI CDROM support
<*>     generic/default IDE chipset support
[*]     PCI IDE chipset support
[*]       Sharing PCI IDE interrupts support
<*>       Generic PCI IDE Chipset Support
[*]       Generic PCI bus-master DMA support
[*]         Use PCI DMA by default when available
[*]     Builtin PowerMac IDE support
[*]       Probe internal ATA/100 (Kauai) first
[*]       PowerMac IDE DMA support

That should be all you need for IDE support. I haven't looked over the rest of your config, if you're still having problems, let us know.

That worked perfectly, thank you.

I'm getting various errors on boot up, but they're problems I can work through with time. :)
