Hi

I have an OLD g3 imac (with only 32M of ram) to witch I'm trying to install gentoo. I just want it to be able to surf the net, do some basic MSN/ICQ/IRC, text editing and basic spreadsheet. Could someone with a similar machine share some experiences while it compile X and friends?

I'm also having a strange bug: system date keep reseting to 1969. Is there something I can do to fix it?

Thanks,

Gustavo

PS: I tried installing ubuntu on this baby, but the installer was so bloated that I couldn't make it work(it keeps complaining about lack of mem). Gentoo on the other hand is being a lot easier to install (I already had expirience with both distributions on x86 machines)

It should work, but you'll really want to upgrade the ram to 64M. Compiling with less is not suggested, but is possible, just really painful. Besides this, the machine will run fine with a minimal WM. Don't expect to run KDE (especially with less than 128Mb of ram!).

Most likely, the system date keeps reseting because the battery is dead. Replace it and you should be fine.

It spent the last 24 hours building locales for glibc (and it's on ru_RU.UTF-8). I should write a note somewhere to set userlocales on this machine. But it seems to be running fine. I was expecting to use xfce4 as a DE. Do you think its worth the compiling time?

I'm also trying to set a cross-compilling environment on my x86 PC (I'm following vapier's guide http://dev.gentoo.org/~vapier/CROSS-COMPILE-HOWTO ) but I can' t get glibc to compile (it keep complaining :

running configure fragment for sysdeps/powerpc/powerpc32/elf
checking for powerpc32 TLS support... yes
running configure fragment for nptl/sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux
running configure fragment for nptl/sysdeps/pthread
checking for forced unwind support... no
configure: error: forced unwind support is required

This is the command I'm using to compile it:

CFLAGS="-O2 -mtune=powerpc -fno-strict-aliasing -pipe" ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="-* ppc" USE="pic nls nptl nptlonly" emerge cross-powerpc-unknown-linux-gnu/glibc
