Had Gentoo on a Intel-based machine, which with compiling only took me 6 hours (15000 rpm scsi hdd)
On the iMac? Nada!!

I've tested this live cd and after a few lines of kernel messages the display became black. The last line I saw was something with "smp_cXX". But the system was still alive because I typed sightlessly "reboot" and the Imac rebooted :/
It's an Imac G5 1.8 GHz from october 2004
