Hello.

When I start xine on the iBook is starts several processes (about 10?) with the name xine.
Xine on an x86 just has one process.

Maybe this is the reason why xine is less performant than mplayer on ppc? I can't watch avi smoothly on G3-600Mhz.

Probably not. I'll bet that you have nptl turned on with your x86 setup and not with your PPC setup. PPC does suffer somewhat by not being able to use the windows codecs. Since AVI is a container format I couldn't tell you exactly what the problem is, but you could try this at least: Check to make sure that you have DMA enabled and that you're using an accelerated X driver.

So the amount of processes is not a usual behaviour?
Concerning the codec, the (Windows?) .avi is going to play, but a little bit choppy, whereby mplayer can deal with better.
What is nptl?
DRI and Xv are available.
DMA is enabled for /dev/hda.

NPTL is the Native Posix Thread Library. It is part of glibc. One of the simplistic differences between it and the standard Linux Thread implementation is that with Linux Threads, each thread shows as a seperate processes. Under NPTL, all of the threads are shown as one process. This is the most likely difference.

As for .AVI, it is a container format. I could have an .AVI with DiVX in it or Theora or WMV9 or one of many other codecs. Just saying that you are trying to play a .AVI doesn't help very much, but if mplayer "just works", well, I'd just use it instead. :)

Hope this helped.

I understand. Does the output of file helps you?
Code:
RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI, 720 x 304, 25.00 fps, video: DivX 5, audio: Dolby AC3 (5 channels, 48000 Hz)

What I notice:
top shows several processes also of other applications.
pan, evolution, licq and some others have 8 processes showing all the same values about memory and cpu.
Therefore I can't see much in top.
Whats wrong with PPC's process management?
