I recently installed Gentoo to a Powerbook G3 Pismo with a great deal of hassle. I got frequent kernel panics during the install which I thought would come from the SMP setting in the install cd's kernel, but now I have found out that the panics occur no matter what the kernel configs are. It seems that it has something to do with the processor becoming idle. The task which causes the panic seems to be called 'swapper' and the call trace includes:

CPU_idle
rest_init
start_kernel
0x32c4

Any chance someone running Gentoo on a Pismo? Has anyone run into similar problems? Could this be a problem with the kernel? This doesn't seem like a hardware problem since Mac OS X and 9 both seem to run fine. This problem occurs with every flavor of linux, though (I tried Debian, Ubuntu, Gentoo, YDL). I've also tried several kernels, 2.6.12, 2.6.10 and 2.6.8.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I'd really want to put gentoo into this computer

Do you have preemption enabled on the kernel? If yes, turn it off. If no, I've ran out of ideas, sorry. :(

I've turned preemptible kernel off, since the PPC FAQ says it's not safe.

I think I'll test some hardware next. I'll try with one one stick of RAM and maybe with a different hard disk...

Well, I don't have any *good* suggestions, that hardware should work fine, but give us the whole trace and I can look into it. Also, if you could try reseting the PRAM, that can help to get rid of some power related weirdness, so give that a shot too.

Good luck!

Ok, here's the output of the panic:

Code:

 <0>Rebooting in 180 seconds..

Edit. I tried zapping the PRAM a couple of times already, but that didn't help. I also did a hardware reset to the PMU.

Just a little update: swapping all the swappable hardware (memory, hard disk) didn't quite work. So now I'm trying 2.4.31 kernel.
