The following is funny, I'm sure I used emerge but I can't find the
package in the "world" set:

xam root # cat /var/lib/portage/world

sys-libs/glibc

However:

xam root # emerge --pretend media-video/mplayer

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild R ] media-video/mplayer-1.0_pre6-r4

which means i used emerge to build mplayer. Just in case you
could find something useful I also put my emerge --info;

This happened to me once too. I have no idea why. Now my gmplayer's UI is black and it's impossible to even see the controls. I just run mplayer from the command line.

It sounds like, because you have only configured your display for 16-bit colour, you don't have enough free colours in your colourmap to display gmplayer properly. This is essentially what the quoted threads talk about. Change your default depth from 16 to 24 in your xorg.conf, then restart X.

Also... you might want to re-emerge mplayer with some optimizations. Your gmplayer output shows that your processor can utilize MMX, MMX2, SSE, 3DNow, and 3DNowExt extensions, but you have not enabled them. Try adding "3dnow 3dnowext mmx mmxext sse" to your USE flags and then re-emerge. And you might even want to get gcc to optimize for your processor with "-march=athlon-4" (or maybe "-march=athlon" -- I am not sure which) in your CFLAGS/CXXFLAGS.

I'm sure you will never believe it but I did search for
this topic. Not only in this forum but also in the gentoo
newsgroup. I find something in the gentoo NG but not
a solution.

I really can't understand why I missed those results, I spent
at least an hour reading in this forum anything connected to
'gmplayer'. I really feel ashamed...

I'll try to modify the color depth but I can remember I chose
this one because I had some troubles with higher depths...

Thank you to ScottFk too, I'll try your "use" optimization.

Bye,
