HI!

I finally installed gentoo !!
It boots ok , but there still remains some problems.
The main one:

The network is still not functional ; I did everything as in installation guide :( . Although when I boot , there is one error:

Code:

  ERROR: Problem : starting needed services;
                           "netmount" was not started.

I didn't read about any netmount in installation guide.
What does the error mean ?
What should I do ?
Please help.
Any suggestions are welcome.

the error is misleading because of an ambiguity in the english language.

it means the service "netmount" was unable to be started becasuse the required service (net.eth0) has not been started.

likely you did not include support for your NIC in the kernel configuration, have not modified /etc/conf.d/net, do not have a network connection, or have compiled in support for a Networking device on your computer that is not on the liveCD (like firewire networking). in which case eth0 might become eth1.

in my kernel .config file Networking support is is included , as wel as :
-- Network device support
-- Ethernet ( 10 or 100 Mb )

don't know if this is what did you mean...
Quote:

have not modified /etc/conf.d/net

I did
here is how:

iface_eth0 ="dhcp"
iface_eth0="10.6.44.44 broadcast 10.6.255.255 netmask 255.255.0.0"
gateway="eth0/10.6.0.1"

( this are setting of my dhcp network )

do not have a network connection

I got . On LiveCD , networking runs ok.

What do you mean by that ?

Also I've tried the following

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/2005.0/handbook-x86.xml?part=4&chap=1

but when I type
# rc-update add net.eth0 default
# rc

It gets the error :
netmount was not started .

Any suggestions ?
thanks in advance .

firstly, you only need one iface_eth0 line, likely the dhcp one. also, if you use dhcp you will not need to use the gateway.

usually this is caused by compiling the NIC in as a module or not at all. given that the things you listed as included were categories and not specific kernel modules, i'm betting this is the problem. my suggestion:

1.) load liveCD.
2.) type lsmod. write down all the module names.
3.) reboot into your install, or mount and chroot it if you are comfortable.
4.) use: grep $MODULENAME /usr/src/linux/.config ## note that $MODULENAME will be something on the lsmod list.

each module should either be listed as compiled in "y", module "m" or be something you know to be unimportant/unrelated.

any module that is listed as "M":
modprobe $MOUDLENAME

you can also try emergeing hotplug and coldplug if you get networking to work.

however, it is likely that the network still will not work. at this point you will need to recompile your kernel making sure to add support for the NIC. you can do this by manually editing the .config file -- find the line CONFIG_MYNICNAME and set it = to "Y". OR better yet you can find the NIC in menuconfig and enable it there.

in rare cases the network will not work because you've unwittingly added a new type of NIC. in my case it was the firewire port which was not supported as a network device by default by the liveCD. upon rebooting, hotplug/coldplug brought it up as eth0 and put my NIC on as eth1. obviosuly the firewire being disconnected prevented me from connection on eth0 as i had planned.

my money is still on kernel configuration issues, though. it takes a few times to get used to it especially if you plan on making the kernel specific to your computer.

because the network doesn't work, netmount doesn't work. however the error comes up when you try to bring up the network which might lead you to beleive netmount is the issue. netmount is not the issue.

I just recompiled the kernel with VIA thechnologies NIC support.

Also changed the /etc/conf.d/net :
echo iface_eth0="dhcp" > /etc/conf.d/net

rebooted , and all goes ok .
