Whenever I attempt to load the volume changer applet, in gnome it complains:

"No volume control elements and/or devices found"

I have alsa and my soundcard built as modules in my kernel, and I ran alsaconf to get them to autoload and work nicely. According to the output of lsmod they are their

And sound works in gaim

Also whenever I try to run totem, it crashes at startup with the error being "No Reason" :-\

running it in a console yields:

totem

(totem:20224): GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to session manager:
Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols
specified are supported and host-based authentication failed.

** (totem:20224): WARNING **: No GConf default audio sink key and
osssink doesn't work
** Message: failed to render default audio sink from gconf

When I open the Multimedia System Selecter, it is set to Custom, and when I hit test I don't hear any sound. I tried setting it to alsasink, but that didn't work :(

I tried reemergin gstreamer, all its plugins and gnome-media, to no avail

:(

Any help would be great

Are you on a hardened system by any chance? I've had the same problem with gstreamer's plugins not loading properly causing sound in gnome not to work. I've tracked the problem down to the fact that my system (gcc and such) was hardened. Unhardening the system (via unlinking the hardened profile and linking it to a default profile, and reemerging binutils gcc and glibc along with any troublesome packages) fixed the problem for me.

If you're not running on a hardened system, perhaps try 'gst-register-0.8' as the user who tries to log into the gnome session. This should register all the gstreamer plugins and alleviate some of your problems (or at least allow you to change the audio source and sink via the multimedia properties of gnome), assuming you've got all the necessary plugins installed (take a look at them via 'emerge -s gst-plugins')

Just make sure that after you unharden your system, you reemerge gstreamer, gst-plugins, and all of the individual plugins (actually, it'd be best if your remeerge your whole system via emerge -e world, but just for a test you can just reemerge those few). The reason hardened causes this is mainly due to some extra compilation flags that change the binary. For most packages that's not a problem, but gstreamer is one of those that can't handle it. The elfloader in Xorg would be another example, which can be worked around by either using the dlloader or unhardening your system. In any case, hardened in my case has caused me more troubles than benefit on my desktops, though it's great for my servers :P

Moved from Multimedia to Duplicate Threads in favour of "No GConf default audio sink key and osssink doesn't work".
