When using the universal CD to boot into for installing Gentoo, it gives me a nice, pseudo graphical screen with shading and gentoo logos.

I figure if the generic CD specification could do that, after configuring and compiling my own kernel it would start with my Genoo also.

Nope I get the plain old boring, 80x24 text screen circa 1989. This is my second Gentoo install. The first one I left out the vga and vesa drivers. This time I did not make that mistake. Still no graphics. What gives.

I have Ati 9600 pro graphics card, and I even made sure that "ATI radeon support" was checked in the configuration screen.

It had 1024x 768 as the default resolution in the menuconfig.

Also, in Lilo I specified append ="video=vesafb:mtrr,ywrap,1024x768-32@85", and still no luck.

My graphics display fine when booting up with my XP partition.

I'm sure this is a newb issue, but I'm afraid to start tweaking my graphics settings. I did that for the first Gentoo install and eventually I caused more harm than good.

Any advice or articles that would help?

Thanks.

Try searching for gensplash. You need several things to make your screen pretty on boot. I don't remember them all, but gensplash will get you going in the right direction.

Here's a quick one though, from http://dev.gentoo.org/~spock/projects/gensplash/archive/gensplash-in-5-easy-steps.txt

Quote:
This document describes how to get splashutils up-n-running in a fast and
painless way on a Gentoo system.

1) Install the latest Gentoo kernel sources:
# emerge gentoo-sources

2) Configure, build and install your kernel:
# cd /usr/src/linux
# make menuconfig
# make
# make install modules_install

3) Install splashutils:
# emerge splashutils

4) Create an initramfs image for fbsplash:
# splash_geninitramfs -v -g /boot/fbsplash-emergence-1024x768 -r 1024x768 emergence

5) Configure your bootloader: (instructions for grub)
# cd /boot/grub

Edit menu.lst, find the entry for your kernel, and put 'splash=silent, theme:emergence'
onto the kernel command line. You should get something like this:

title Gentoo Linux (g-d-s 2.6.11)
root (hd0,4)
kernel /boot/gentoo-2.6.11 ro root=/dev/hda1 video=vesafb:1024x768-32@85 splash=silent,theme:emergence
initrd /boot/fbsplash-emergence-1024x768

This is it. Reboot and enjoy fbsplash :)
