Hello all,

Desperate Help needed... here is the situation.
Have powerbook pismo with a 40G internal hd and a 30G external hd connected through firewire.
I have gentoo install on my internal hd. (kerenel 2.6.12-rc3 and gcc-3.4.4)
I want to install gentoo on the external hardrive. I set up my partition almost exactly as on my internal drive.
Process I followed:
1. Booted from livecd
2. boot G3 kernel.
3. mac-fdisk /dev/sda (external drive)
4. > i (init)
5. > b ( create boot) at 2p
6. > c (create swap) named swap 1 G at 3p
7. > c (create partions :
4p -> root 2.5G
5p -> opt 2G
6p -> usr 8G
7p -> home 7.5G
8p -> var 5G
9p -> var/mail 1G
10p -> tmp 1.2G
8. >p to verify
9. >w to write
10. >q
11 mac-fdisk /dev/sda (to verify)
12. >p
output is correct partition map;
13. >q quit mac-fdisk
14. mkfs.ext3 all the partition and mkswap /dev/hda3
---
Now I wanted to copy /home from the internal drive to external drive.
---
15. mount /dev/hda6 /mnt/gentoo -t ext3
hda6 my internal drive /root partition...
The partition was empty only an empty lost+found directory was present...80
What the hell where did the data go... I check all of my internal drive partitions and they were all empty...!

What just happened...! is there anyway to recup the data that was lost from the drive...

I lost really important info and am desperate to find a way to recup them... whatever the solution...

Thanks for the help,

zoe

just realized i might have made an error while doing mkfs.ext3....
I thought I had done mkfs.ext3 /dev/sda... but i might have done like in the post...
mkfs.ext3 /dev/hda...

if that's the mistake anyway i'll be able to recup the data ...

thx.

there's no real advantage and many disadvantages to having 9 different partitions for linux. /usr /opt/ etc/ etc.
You'll get much better disk usage if you just go with /

just an idea.
