I have just installed gnome and then emerged mplayer but found that it didn't put a icon in the applications menu, is there a easy way to get it there. I know that somehow when I installed programs before gnome like firefox, openoffice, it added them automaticly.

And somehow my screen seems largish at 1024x724 comapred to windowsXP at that res. Is it normal that everyone is turing the fonts for the individual programs to the lowest so they can fit in stuff?
I know I can do a higher res but don't want to wreak my eyes at 60Hz

Not too sure why your menus aren't getting updated.

Maybe check out smeg / denu for adding in menu items manually, although having said that smeg broke the "Desktop" menu on m y gnome 2.10.1 install.....

For fonts I found this http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Xorg_and_Fonts very helpful so maybe start there....

I hope this gives you a bit of an idea of where to start....

Whenever you add an app to the new version of Gnome it does create a Menu item if it follows the opendesktop standard. The problem is you have to logoff and relog back on for it to update the menus. Sort of a lame bug. I would also recommend getting smeg for now so you can edit the menus yourself.
