I did some price comparison on the mac mini. If you load up the 1.25 G4 (512MB RAM, superdrive, and 80GB Drive for $699US) version to meet all other specs of the 1.42 G4 (update to 512MB RAM and superdrive for $749US) version, you are paying $50 US for .17 GHz (1.42GHz vs 1.25GHz) difference in speed between the two models.

What I would like to know from those that have put Gentoo on the Mac Mini... Is the extra .17MHz worth it? The G4s are both the same, just different in speed, correct?

Edit: made speed correction

That's 0.17 GHz for one -- 170MHz. But otherwise yes. They are the same. But 170MHz is still about 15% increase in cpu speed.

I haven't had one of each side by side but I can't see there being any earth shattering improvement in speed. if you are good at (un)soldering very very small resistors you can overclock the 1.25 Mini to 1.42 and beyond by simply removing a few of them from the motherboard.

The thing that really boosted the performance on my Mini was installing a 7200rpm hard drive (even better.. I got it for free)

I'd pocket the $50. The difference is negligible especially on a what, 133mhz bus?
