Hello everyone, I've decided to join the nerd crowd by installing Linux on my G3. I initially started with Yellow Dog I was able to partition and continue with the install, but it failed because the disk I have says to have been corupt. The real problem started when I decided to install Gentoo on the box, the live CD is not able to find my hard-drive. The system gives the error: unable to open /dev/hda read-only file system; meaning that the CD is being mounted when I issue the command #parted?

livecd root # parted

has been opened read-only.

Has anyone gotten this problem before? To make this story short, I went to the nearest MAC store and asked what I could do to fix t:( his problem. The young man told me to boot from my OS X CD and partition my HDD with it. I booted and I was able to partition the hard drive, then again I cannot get it to work. I did swap HDD from the original 20G to a 120G I had laying around. I proceeded to intall OS X on it again and went all the way through, when I got to the point of rebooting blue, it looked as though it was going to load Jaguar but instead a circle with a slash across it came on (like those no smoking signs)? I am puzzled as to what I can do? I did also tried permissions check on the disk but got no errors. Please help!

The reason why you couldn't see the disk is this bug:
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=87665

Give that a try, if you still have problems, feel free to ask!

Good luck!

I downloaded the module for this bug #87665, that you posted in response to my post. Now, it does see the hard drive yet I am still getting an error that I am unable to write to the disk. I load the module like this insmod x64xxx, then I check to see that it got loaded lsmod. I run parted and it opens /dev/hdc.When I create a bootfile it asks me to reboot to be able to use the new bootfile? If I reboot I have to re-load the module. Is the the manner in which we use this fix? Please help!

Thank you,

Dave

What do you mean by "create a new bootfile"? You shouldn't have to reboot unless you were editing a partition that was mounted. (Which is a bad idea anyway).
