I did a stage1 install and compiled the kernel manually, using the hardened kernel source. My eth0 was working fine during installation but now after my first reboot into my new system, it does not. Here's the scoop:

While booting:
Starting eth0
Bringing up eth0
dhcp
eth0 does not exist
ERROR: Problem starting needed services.
"netmount" was not started.

dmesg | grep eth shows nothing

lspci (/bin or /sbin) gives a command not found error

ifconfig only gives info for lo

cat /proc/pci | grep Ethernet shows Ethernet controller: 3Com Corporation 3c905C-TX/TX-M (Tornado) (rev 120)

/etc/conf.d/net has iface_eth0="dhcp"

/sbin/dhcpcd exists

/etc/init.d/net.eth0 start leads to the same eth0 does not exist error I get at boot.

I have a feeling I need to install a module or something....

If you used genkernel:
Code:
nano -w /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6

add "vortex" without the quotes, save and exit.

If you performed a manual kernel configuration:

Code:

Device Drivers ---> Networking support --->

[*] Networking support
[*] Ethernet (10 or 100Mbit)
[*]   3COM cards
<*>     3c5903c900 series ...

I just tried:
cd /usr/src/linux
make menuconfig
selecting the network drivers as suggested by forgotten1
make && make modules_install
reboot

Still no cigar...

Looks like I sent you down a bunny trail, I should have searched the forums first instead!

The resolution is contained in this post:
