Hi there,

I've this: $ emerge -upvD cups

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild N ] x11-misc/ttmkfdir-3.0.9-r3 19 kB
[ebuild N ] media-libs/fontconfig-2.3.2 941 kB
[ebuild N ] x11-base/xorg-x11-6.8.2-r2 -3dfx -3dnow +bitmap-fonts -cjk -debug -dlloader -dmx -doc -font-server -insecure-drivers +ipv6 -minimal +mmx +nls -nocxx -opengl +pam -sdk +sse -static +truetype-fonts +type1-fonts (-uclibc) -xprint -xv 45,108 kB
[ebuild N ] x11-terms/xterm-200-r3 -Xaw3d -toolbar -truetype +unicode 0 kB
[ebuild N ] x11-libs/motif-config-0.9 0 kB
[ebuild N ] x11-libs/openmotif-2.2.3-r7 5,029 kB
[ebuild N ] app-text/xpdf-3.00-r9 +motif -nodrm -truetype 522 kB
[ebuild U ] net-print/cups-1.1.23-r4 [1.1.23-r2] -cjk -gnutls +nls +pam +samba -slp +ssl 8,501 kB

Is there any way to figure what exactly needs this X? When I check my -upvD world, and try to pretendly update each of the packages, cups is the only one bringing up the X as dependencies.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Use the --tree option to evaluate dependecies:

Code:
 emerge -Dupvt cups

It's because of
Code:

RDEPEND="${DEP}
    app-text/xpdf"

in the ebuild.
You can get rid of it with "app-text/xpdf-3.00-r9" in your package.provide

Hi there,

Thanks a lot for the replies :-)

And do you know how xpdf became a normal not pdf-enabled cups? :D
Sounds quite strange, since I'd rather use an older version of cups instead of installing Xorg onto a printserver :-/

Thanks,

As I understand it is has something to do with pdftops - but I can say that I don't have any problems without xpdf on my cups server...

I was able to get rid of it by adding -sdl to my USE variables (along with -X -gtk -gnome -qt -alsa -qtmt -pdflib -truetype -dga -gpm). Sadly, I'm not sure which of the rest of those is also necessary for convincing cups to not install X for me. (Same situation - I'm running a headless server so don't want X on it at all). But untitl I added -sdl to the mix, it kept trying to install X.

The wierd thing is I think it might have been someothing in mysql somewhere that wanted to use sdl (the simple direct media layer). This is because every time I typed in 'emerge -uDp cups' it would end up updpating mysql as well.

I hope this helps somebody.
