Ive had this Budget model Satellite for a year or so now and have had really great success with it. Theres no initial issues with installing gentoo at all and pretty much every feature of the laptop is useable. Here is my collection of conf files that correspond to the configuration of the laptop.

APM/ACPI

I havn't worked with it that much but ive had good results with what Ive down. APM and ACPI both work, poweroff, and standby mode work perfectly. However I havn't tested software suspend yet, however I do plan on it.

Ive in the past got the modem to work however don't that documentation with me at the moment. However It does work.

The only issues that im having right now, is during kernel boot it hangs for 2 minutes while working with my cdrom drive. Ive run the nitro sources and thats fixed it in the past, but from reading around I think it's something to do with the ide-scsi kernel driver. Im going to do some more research and post back what I can. Also DRI works perfectly and I get 1000+ fps however only as root. Im working on fixing that for now.

sorry for the quick and dirty, Ill beautify the document a little later.

Alright ive been working non-stop all night on this ide1 30 second pause problem. (Yes it's really that annoying) From memory the problem came about at the release of the 2.6.8 kernel which prompted me to switch to the nitro sources, that solved my problems but due to the fact that I much perfer the gentoo-sources Im here today trying to fix it.

Ive created a terrible workaround to the problem

title=Ares
root (hd0,0)
kernel /bzImage root=/dev/hda3 idebus=66 ide0=0x1f0,0x3f6,14 ide1=0x170,0x376,15 ide1=noprobe

effectively disabling the cdrom on my laptop, but at least it fixes the problem. Im going to see what I can do with other kernel patch sets. I shall report back.
