Maybe this is something I could do to give back to the gentoo community for all the help I have gotten over the years.

I have a simple idea for speeding up the overall emerge process.

At the moment portage seems to do everything in order. By that, i mean if it needs to install 14 packages, it downloads package 1 then compiles then downloads 2, then compiles ... until it reaches package 14 (or fails)

The problem I have seen with this is the time it takes to connect to a server sometimes the cpu is at zero, just waiting.

What if we fork off a download thread that downloads in order and another thread that compiles and installs.
I realize some thread syncronization will be needed to prevent attemps to compile packages not yet done downloading.

Is this already an option that i don't know about cause I haven't read the fine manual? :-) if not, where would I start on this kind of a fix. CVS, patch? etc

You are not the first person thinking of this, actually one of the very early threads https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=11 discussed it and hundreds other since that time.

Have a look at this faq and maybe also this thread to get an idea how to make this work.
