In order for tux (a generic non-root user) to su he needs to be
in the wheel group . For music (for running ALSA cmds, I
suppose), tux may need to be in the audio group.

To do this, you can either carefully edit the /etc/group file, or
else use a GUI tool. Perhaps the cmd you use to create tux will
also allow to specify his groups. (You'll likely want to glance at
/etc/group in any case, to see what groups exist; e.g camera, cdrom.)

From the Gentoo Handboook

Quote:
For instance, to create a user called john who is member of the wheel, users and audio groups, log in as root first (only root can create users) and run useradd:

Login: root
Password: (Your root password)

# useradd -m -G users,wheel,audio -s /bin/bash john
# passwd john
Password: (Enter the password for john)
Re-enter password: (Re-enter the password to verify)

I'm thinking htat the handbook needs to be updated sometime. Now with udev there are other groups like usb and video that users should probably be added to.
