You should not use Pentium4 tarballs, as the P-M instruction set does not support MMX2 and a few other things, whereas the P4 does. You should use the Pentium3 binary tarballs. Your CFLAGS should contain "-march=pentium-m" if you're using GCC 3.4.x (or being very brave and using one of the GCC4 snapshots) or "-march=pentium3 -msse2" if you're using GCC 3.3.x; also you should make sure your USE flags in /etc/make.conf contain "mmx -mmxext sse sse2" so that any relevant ebuilds can take advantage of this.

You'll also want to configure your kernel for the Pentium M (CONFIG_MPENTIUM, under "Processor type and features  Processor family").

the installation handbook says to not make any modifications to the use variable if you're performing a stage 3 with grp installation. im doing a stage 3 install but i dont know what grp is? should i still do what you said?

A grp installation is one using the binary packages of the optional package-cd. If you are not using that then it is safe to change your use flags.
