I am attempting to upgrade from dbus 0.23.4

Does anyone have any ideas as to what is going on?

[edit] Ok, If I emerge with USE="-python" it works just fine. What does the python support in dbus do anyway?

I think you have the same error as this guy. I don't know what python has to do with dbus but if you want it included you need to reemerge pyrex before the dbus upgrade and the problem should be solved. I had the same problem on two boxes and It's fixed.
