I was emerging world (using distcc), cracklib had just been emerge,
pam was to be emerged (downloading was over),
when the emerging faced problem with writeability of files on my top filesystem
(/dev/hdf2 mounted as / with type ext3) Every command I try that may write to
disk tells me filsystem is (now) read-only. I tried
Code:
mount -t ext3 -o remount,rw /dev/hdf2 /

but the system tolds me that block device is read-only.
I then rebooted, hoping this was just a kernel fantasy,
with no better result, not even the second time. My
Has anybody faced such an issue ?
Has anybody got to escape from this trap and could share the trick ?
Thanks in advance.

Check your kernel messages with dmesg, the kernel may be turning off r/w access due to an error.

It seems this was a filesystem pb as booting with 2005.0 CD
I fscked my top root partition (with a lot of pb corrected by fsck)
and it seems to work now.
Unfortunately I did not think about dmesg before rebooting,
so I guess I lost first sign of the problem but since it dealed
with writing not possible I guess chances that dmesg could
have told me anything are low.
Thanks for responding so quickly.

Well, just a word of warning: usually when the filesystem turns read only, there is a serious problem such as hardware problems or filesystem corruption. dmesg will show these types of errors.

Good luck!
