I've got a dual 1.8 Powermac G5 and I want to get Gentoo running on it. I've done several x86 installations, but as far as ppc goes, I'm at somewhat of a loss as to whether I should do a PPC64 installation or a PPC32. What is the current state of the PPC64? Will I have significantly more trouble compiling most programs? What about hardware support? I know my Airport Extreme won't work, but what are the chances of getting some acceleration on a Mac Nvidia card? I guess I'd just like the lowdown on each one and hope to see what is best for my needs. I'm shooting to make a really quick box but it needs to be functional. Thanks in advance.

Well 64 bit is only going to get better so no harm in installing it now.

You should check out packages.gentoo.org and look for the apps you want to run. there are not yet most of the programms keyworded for ppc64, because of a lack of time for compiling/testing. Also there are some problems you might run into. For now konqueror is the only available webbrowser on ppc64. mozilla/firefox are "in the work". :x So if you want to run KDE you are just fine with ppc64. But gnome is not fully stable yet, due to the dependency of mozilla (epiphany requires mozilla or firefox).

You won't get hardware acceleration for your nvidia graphics card neither on ppc32 nor on ppc64...
