Hey guys, I'm sure I've seen this somewhere but can't find it! Is it possible to install gentoo from a running windows system? I know it can be done from inside linux, as i have done it, so in theory it should be doable.

Well, you can do that with vmware, but it costs money.

Sure it is possible in theory, but you can't do this today. The problem is that there are none of the tools needed to install Gentoo in a windows system. Some linux distro's do have the necessary tools (like Knoppix), which is why it is possible. I think hands down the best way to install Gentoo is from the official Gentoo livecd's.

I'm pretty sure it's possible from CoLinux under windows, but the kernel would have to be 'non-standard' shall we say? A quick web search for 'colinux gentoo' or something similar should find you some resources. If I remember rightly I think colinux is OSS?

One of the guys where I work installed Gentoo on Windows so he could use Scribus. It works well for him. I am pretty sure he used colinux. I will ask him about it today when I get to work.

I think he means installing gentoo on a real harddrive not on a virtual device.

You can install it from every running linux which contains the necessary tools. So most Linux Distri should be able to do it, actually the gentoo liveCD or Knoppix liveCD don't differ that much to an installed linux Distri, its just that the liveCD's run from RAM/CD and not from HD/RAM.

Vmware can actually install it to the hard drive so that when you reboot it is actually possible to boot it. I assume other similar tools can do that too.
