kernel access of bad area, sig: 11 [#1]
(mumbo jumbo i dont understand)
kernel access of bad area, sig: 11 [#2]
(more mumbo jumbo)
(then frozen system)

I get this error after entering the command below during the installation process:

# tar -xvjf /mnt/gentoo/portage-<date>.tar.bz2 -C /mnt/gentoo/usr

It runs through the routine for a few minutes but crashes at x11-themes.

I am installing on an imac G3 233mhz rev.A tray loading.

Please help.

Can you provide the "mumbo jumbo"?
What filesystem are you unpacking to, ext3, reiserfs?

the file system is any file system. I thought it was the FS at first but it does it on all. I cannot provide the mumbo jumbo because i would have to remember 5 alphanumerics at a time and run back and forth across the room a thousand times replicating them. I guess it is just my imac. I've tried 2 other distributions and they all fail after writing to the hard drive for the similar length. It isnt during any cd reading and for gentoo im using live cd. I thought it was a bad sector but i switched partition space and it happens at the exact same place. Strange, i had os 9 check the hard drive. If i get desperate i may switch out th hard drive but all i have to replace it is 10gb and below. thumbs down.
