My beige G3 often splits its CPU time ~50/50 between system and user processes (eg. while compiling). 50% system seems high, and my G3 266 needs all the help it can get. I use distcc, so I suspected the bmac NIC, but I can saturate it and only use ~5% CPU. I'm using 1k/block ext3 on a SCSI drive. Could the MESH SCSI controller be responsible or is such high usage inevitable? I thought SCSI was supposed to burden the CPU very little.

Well, check to make sure that nothing is spamming in your dmesg, sometimes this can cause behaviour like this. Also, can you isolate a behaviour that produces the same results seperately? Perhaps it's the console framebuffer, have you tried piping the output of your emerge to a file?

I usually use SSH rather than the console, and I don't have anything spamming my logs. Might it be ext3's fault? I'm not sure how to get to the bottom of this except by trying different hardware and filesystems.
