I'd like to install some packages which aren't available for ppc64 yet so I was wondering if you can install ppc packages on a ppc64 system

If so how? Are there any guides?
Thanks,
Hish

Short: Currently not yet fully supported.

Longer: The feature you are requesting is called multilib. multilib makes it possible to install 32bit versions of a package in a 64bit environment. currently this is being worked on, but not yet fully functional. But you could install a full chroot environment and install/start packages out of this environment.

BTW: which packages do you want to install? If they are not keyworded for ppc64, that doesn't mean they do not work. Maybe just noone has tested them. So you can try to add ppc64 manualy to the ebuilds:

Code:

$ emerge gentoolkit-dev
$ ekeyword ppc64 /usr/portage/path/to/ebuild-name.ebuild
$ ebuild /usr/portage/path/to/ebuild-name.ebuild digest
$ emerge ebuild-name

If that works you should open a bugreport at https://bugs.gentoo.org and assign it to ppc64@gentoo.org. Please provide the package name and (if any) dependencies with version numbers.

I notice that in /usr/portage/profiles/etc/etc there is now a multilib directory.

These emails are almost a year old - is multilib working now? Is it a suggested choice yet? I have a JS20 that would benefit greatly from some ppc apps - not just ppc64

Yes, it works on my G5 running ppc64 linux(64-bit userland). But I haven't tested it intensively, in my case I only run 32-bit opera-8.5.2 and firefox-1.0.7, which work fine.
