Hi,

I have an 2004.3 amd64 box that has not been upgraded in the last 5 or 6 months. I have read the info about how to switch to the new profle but there is one thing I do not understand. This computer is a server and I don't think I have any programs that need 32 bit libs installed (I don't have X, so no acroread, openoffice, plugins, etc.) but I have emul libraries (probably because it was recommended in the 2004.3 handbook). Is there a list of the packages that need these emul libraries ?

This is the info I got about upgrading these compat libraries before chanching the profile symlink:

app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-glibc-2.3.5 [1.1]
app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-baselibs-2.1.1 [1.2.2-r1]

So I think I do not need multilib and have made the link to the nomultilib profile and portage does not want to update these libraries anymore. After upgrading the rest of the system, can I just unmerge these libraries ? is there anything I should consider about these process ?

Thanks in advance

Edit:

I just tried to emerge (update) single package to see what happens and I get this error

* It appears you have switched to the 2005.0 profile without following
* the upgrade guide. Please see the following URL for more information:
* http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/base/amd64/2005.0-upgrade-amd64.xml

As far as I know I do not need to do anything special if I switch to the no multilib profile. Is it because I have the emul packages installed ?

so all you did was
Code:
rm /etc/make.profile
ln -s /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/amd64/2005.0/no-multilib /etc/make.profile
emerge -upv system
emerge -uv system
??????

Yes and no. I still have not done "emerge system" because I wanted to be sure that I will not screw up my system (it is a server). I have only rearranged the symlink.

emerge system will just re-emerge your system files and recompile them with the new profile in mind (or new glibc if that has been updated)

I can not update the system. I get the same message.

Code:

emerge -u system
Calculating system dependencies ...done!
>>> emerge (1 of 73) sys-devel/patch-2.5.9-r1 to /

Does portage check that I have the emul libraries installed and that I have not done the steps related to the multiplib option ??

Moved from Gentoo on AMD64 to Duplicate Threads in favour of 'Switched to 2005.0 profile without following upgrade guide'.
