trying to install and everything goes fine till I chroot and env-update which throws

hda: task_in_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete Datarequest Error}
hda: task_in_intr: status=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=12384322, sector 12384316
ide: failed opcode was: unknown
end_request: I/O error, dev hda, and so on...

I think the disk is bad but it's all I got. It's for a small router/IDS box.

Fedora works on it (i'd hate to go back). It throws DMA errors periodically on fedora but at least it installs and works.

I tried adjusting the DMA to see if that would help at the beginning of my gentoo install but hdparam wasn't found....

is all hope lost for this disk and gentoo? what can i do to get this to work?

It could be a DMA issue (emerge hdparm), but if it is not, the disk probably is bad.
I would recommend ditching the disk as disk defects have a nasty tendency to
escalate, but if you really must, you can scan the disk with badblocks, (comes with
sys-fs/e2fsprogs), and then give the output of badblocks to mkfs, so that the bad
areas are not included in the filesystem.

Well, that depends very much on the country in question. :) For older hardware I
would recommend online auctions, as they usually have good deals on secondhand
stuff.

I would prefer brand spanking new. A 40G is cheap but much more than required for this particular system.

Can a usbdrive handle it an OS that's always up? Or would it explode? I'm in the US for now.

Well, you probably won't find anything under 40G as new anymore. An USB
drive would probably work (if it is a real drive - not a dongle - USB Flash
drives would die out quick from the amount of writes). Get a bunch of old
disks and set them up on a RAID array, so it wouldn't matter if one or two
of them dies of old age.
