I am considering getting a 12" G4 iBook, since im not the biggest fan of Mac OS X i was wondering how well supported are they under gentoo?

What i mean by that is what are the issues with it other than airport extreme not working and ati drivers being non exsistant.

More genrally:
Are 12" iBooks very fast in terms of compiling? I ask because i went mad waiting for this G3 400 mac to compile a system, it took 3 days consecutively and i dont want to ever go through that again.

Is it worth getting a ppc iBook? Or should I just wait for the evitable release of a x86 pentium M based iBook, which i know will be faster and be able to run the ati drivers?

The ATi 9200 in the iBooks is completely supported (including 3D) in Linux. I've only got a PB G4 500, so I can't really comment on the speed of the newer models. Besides AE, the hardware should be fairly well supported.

the ATI 9200 is working with 3D-Support. Except Airport extreme i got everything working: function-keys, suspend to ram, dynamic cpu-speed .......
Linux on an iBook is a good choice, when you aren`t a gamer !!! There are not many games running .....
For that you will still have to boot OS X.

Speed is ok. Starting kde for example takes a few seconds longer than my desktop-system (XP 2500). But since speed is not everything on a notebook .....

I have a newish iBook G4 (a few months old). I had lots of bugs with the 2.6.10 kernel, and some bugs with 2.6.11. The 2.6.12 kernel seems to work great though. All the little annoyances appear to be worked out.

AFAIK the ati 9550 has NO accelerated 3D support in linux as it is based on some revision of the R300 chip (radeon 9500 and up). 3D support is only aviable for radeons based on the R(V)100, R(V)200 and RV2X0 chips (up to and including the radeon 9250, see also http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/ATIRadeon). 2D support is aviable though for all ati radeon chips. So you will be able to run Xorg.x11 in full color with all whistles and bells.

There also might be some issues with the trackpad. It uses the same trackpad as the latest Powerbook. There are some hacks to make it more or less work (search this forum), but there is no native support for it. If you want your ibook to run Gentoo, you better try to get one of the previous generation.

Wouter ;-)
