Hi PPC-lovers,

I'm planning to buy a new pc in the near future. Until now, I've only owned x86 machines, but I would like to try a mac for a change. My eye has fallen onto the mac mini + apple cinema display combination, as it is affordable and looks very slick.

Is there anyone with such a setup who has it working nicely? By nicely I mean; ethernet up, X.org functioning with radeon direct rendering enabled, sound working,...

Or are there people saying: don't do this as you'll end up being disappointed, because... ?

Greets,
Massis

there were some issues with the cinema displays imo.. but i dont know how the status is for these today. if you buy me one i could test it :-) the rest of the mini is working great. i havnt checked out dmix and multpile sound sources yet. and of course dont expect the the airport extreme to work (soon).

Yeah, I've read about people getting the cinema display to work, I've read about people getting the mac mini to work. But I've never read about people getting the combination to work. So that's why I was asking...

OK, send me your address... Naah, just kidding

Anyone else with an opinion?

I believe most of the things you mentioned can be done. But what you will most probably not get done is direct rendering. I am not familiar with the latest r350 opensource development, but the ati-drivers simply DO NOT WORK!

Shouldn't the mac mini be able to work with the open source radeon driver that's in the kernel? The card in the mini is a ATI Radeon 9200, that card is supported by the driver, no?

Some links for those interested:

In other words: mixed results.

Feel free to post your .config and xorg.conf files if you succeeded

I have an iBook, that also has a 9200. It works great.
It's supported by the radeon kernel driver and Xorg's radeon or ati driver.

Oops, sorry, 9200 works, of course :?. From R350 it does not. I thought there was a 9600 or 9700 in there, like for the Powerbook.

My mistake, sorry!

You'll be dissapointed with the mini, it's not built for power at all so don't expect to be able to play games very well on it, or do any design on C4D, 3DSMAX, or anything. But I guess you could do it if that's what you want. The mini's good, but not if you're looking for power like from the PowerMac G5 or even iMac G5...

:bump: sorry

<edit>
@JoseJX: you're right, i should have been more precise

Anyway, I wanted to know if anyone got the combination mini + cinema display to work. No luck there, but I kept on googling and I am confident that it should be possible. By "merging" these links you should receive a working combination
1. kernel config: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-359606-highlight-mac+mini+config.html in this very forum
2. same link for hdparm configuration
3. https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3032 in xorg bugzilla has a xorg.conf file for mac mini + cinema display

Hopefully, this can be of help to someone... I'm still in the process of deciding
