Hi all!

Anyone knows when we PPC owners will be able to emerge the new Xorg?

No, sorry! I'd like to know too!

I tried to emerge xorg-x11-6.8.99.15 and 6.8.99.16 but both fail because of unresolved symbols in the savage driver files (even though I don't need any savage drivers... :-) ).

Has anyone tried the current CVS version?

Feel free to keyword it yourself in an overlay or use /etc/portage/package.keywords to emerge it. It'll be marked ~ppc as soon as one of us gets a chance to test it out. It will be package masked for a while anyway while the X11 team gets the kinks worked out.

xorg-x11-6.8.99.14 has been working flawlessly for me for the past couple of weeks, try that...

I should mention that DRI with a Radeon 9600 M10 (on my powerbook) is ok, but is broken on post 2.6.11 kernels (or whenever it was that the patch for multiple AGP buses went in).

I was wondring if DRI would work for the Radeon 9600 pro also ?

Yes. (it should)
The Radeon 9600 Pro uses the same chip as the M10 (rv350).

To give it a go you'll need xorg 6.8.99.x (I'm using 6.8.99.14), Mesa CVS and DRM CVS (the R300 driver has been merged into these) from freedesktop.org CVS.
I've not tried in the last three weeks so try it, and post your success to the dri-users mailing list.

To save you time, make a backup of your currently emerged xorg with quickpkg
Code:
quickpkg xorg-x11

See man 1 quickpkg.

the last time i tried ( 6.8.99.8 ) on my alubook it was not that funny: font corruption and xorg hanging after a few minutes. YMMV of course.
Will try latest masked one available in portage this weekend, but the mesa + r300 driver stuff still has to been pulled form cvs, am i right ?

cheers

Well, everything compiles great (xorg-server), but I don't seem to be getting it to work... Just a black screen...

Have a look here:

http://homepages.fh-regensburg.de/~auc30297/public/snap0000.png

glxinfo says

Code:
Direct rendering = yes

If anybody is interested I can post a small howto!

So far there have been no crashes. It is fairly stable: I played neverball for some time without a problem - although I needed to disable reflections, which seems to be a feature yet to be implemented... Also tuxracer runs stable.

I am going to write my howto (which is essentially a compiled version of the howtos around) soon.

HighOnBonsai: What kernel version are you using?
I've had problems with AGP init for DRM on everything after 2.6.11.

Adding
Code:

    Option     "XaaNoScanlineImageWriteRect"
    Option     "XaaNoScanlineCPUToScreenColorExpandFill"

to the device section of xorg.conf fixed font corruption for me. Was this necessary for you?

Yes this was necessary for me too! I will try to write the howto this evening (in several hours), because currently I am very busy (going to Edinburgh in 2 weeks). My kernel is 2.6.12. I had problems loading the uninorth-agp module. This was caused by the line

Code:
alias uninorth-agp agpgart

in the /etc/modprobe.conf file. I commented out the line and

Code:
modprobe uninorth-agp

worked again (this is a just a temporary hack - if anybody has a cleaner solution, feel free to tell me)

Some prerequisites are:

xorg-x11-6.8.99.15 (with USE="insecure-drivers")

and you will need "cvs"

Code:
emerge cvs

Hummm...
I have both agpgart and uninorth-agp modules loaded... Is this a problem?
