This isn't really a pure installation question, but I didn't know where else to put it. I've run out of room on my root partition. I recently added a new hard drive, so now I have the choice of 1. Re-installing or 2. Migrating my root partition. I don't think there's any good reason to re-install, so could I get away with:

a. Creating a new partition and filesystem with fdisk and mk2fs
b. Copy everything over recursively with cp (Will there be files it won't have permissions to copy?) (And can I do this from normal multiuser mode?) (Maybe it would be better to do it from the installation CD shell...)
c. Update /etc/fstab
d. Leave bootloader as in and leave /boot right where is it mounted BUT modify /boot/grub/grub.conf to point to new root

(is /etc/mtab created dynamically)

Anything else?

Hi.

Yes, you're right and on the right track. You should do a, c and d as you've stated. If you want some help with b, you can look at this thread and specifically at this post.
You should do this under a live-cd and yes, /etc/mtab is created automaticaly.
