Hi-

I'd like to install sun-jdk on some Gentoo machines that do not have GUIs.

In the make.conf USE variable, I set -X -kde -qt -gnome -gtk but the sun-jdk emerge still wants to build X, KDE-Base, OpenGL, ALSA, and all that stuff that has no business on these machines.

Must I simply use the Sun install directly? I hate to lose java-config .

TIA,
-dub

Try
echo "dev-java/sun-jdk -X -kde -qt -gnome -gtk" >> /etc/portage/package.use

Does this help?

Thanks, but, unfortunately, the results are the same.

Have you tried the blackdown-jdk?
I think, X is required because of swt and swing classes
You can try to edit the ebuild yourself and remove the dependencies, but I won't try this

some USE-Flags that might cause this are
Code:
arts
mozilla
browserplugin

Code:
USE="-arts" emerge -pv sun-jdk

and sun-jdk can be emerged without xorg & Co. as you see with
Code:
USE="-*" emerge -pv sun-jdk

Wow! That did it. Amazing what that one little dependency causes. Reminds me of differential equations class.

Thanks.

Just a followup. When installing without the gui-related stuff, emerge reports warnings as might be expected. But I will be doing deeper-than-normal deployment testing on our apps before clearing the deployment.

edited emerge warnings :

Code:
THIS SYSTEM VM IS NOT SUFFICIENT, REQUIRED BINARIES WERE NOT FOUND
[...]
 * Some parts of Sun's JDK require virtual/x11 to be installed.
 * Be careful which Java libraries you attempt to use.
