Hey everyone.

The first time i booted my Gentoo 2005.0 installation, i got an error when i booted.
Code:

The root block device is unspecified or not detected.
Please specify a device to boot, or "shell" for a shell...
boot() ::

I'm still able to login though, by giving it the name of my root partition,
Code:
/dev/hda4

Incase you need it, below you will find my grub.conf followed by my fstab. Thanks.

Code:

defualt 0
timeout 15
splashimage=(hd0,1)/grub/splash.xpm.gz

title=Gentoo Linux 2.6.12 r6
root (hd0,1)
kernel /kernel-genkernel-x86-2.6.12-gentoo-r6 root=/dev/ram0 init=/linuxrc ramdisk=8192 real_boot=/dev/hda4 udev
initrd /initramfs-genkernel-x86-2.6.12-gentoo-r6

windows stuff here....

Code:

/dev/hda2     /boot     ext2     defaults,noatime     1 2
/dev/hda4     /           ext3     noatime     0 1
/dev/hda3     none     swap    sw     0 0
/dev/cdroms/cdrom0      /mnt/cdrom     iso9660     noauto,user     0 0
/dev/fd0       /mnt/floppy     auto    noauto,user     0 0
none            /proc     proc      defaults     0 0
none            /dev/shm tmpfs     defaults     0 0

(sorry for the poor formatting)

If you have a sata disk make sure the drivers for sata and for the sata controller are included in your kernel and not build as modules.

No, my hard disk is IDE. I think the problem lies with my grub.conf file because when that error message comes up, all i have to do is type in /dev/hda4 and it works. mabey im missing something in there?

Well, apart from this typo: defualt 0 instead of default 0, I don see anything wrong with your grub.conf. And the typo doesn't have anything to do with it I think.

I believe that should be "real_root" instead of "real_boot".

Indeed. That was what was wrong. Funny though, as I have tried to install Gentoo 4 other times, and always discontinued usage because of that. wow. im an idiot.

If it makes you feel better, it took me way more than four tries to successfully install Gentoo when I first tried.
