After running "emerge sync", all emerge attempts fail with the following error message:
"ARCH is not set... Are you missing the /etc/make.profile symlink?"

I've tried various things to fix this. If I create a symbolic link to any of the 2005.0 or greater profiles, the above is the error message I receive. ("ln -s /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2005.1 /etc/make.profile"... it's a P3 laptop, Son Vaio PCG-F480)

If I try linking to an older profile, 2004.3 or earlier, I get a message about the version being deprecated, and something like the following:

!!! 'str' object has no attribute 'insert'
!!! 'rm -Rf /usr/portage/profiles; emerge sync' may fix this. If it does
!!! not then please report this to bugs.gentoo.org and, if possible, a dev
!!! on #gentoo (irc.freenode.org)

I've tried correcting this by downloading and unpacking the portage-rescue package based on the README directions. ("tar xjpUvf portage-rescue-2.0.50-r1-x86.tbz2 -C /" from "/usr/portage/sys-apps/portage/files/" after downloading the 2.0.50 zip as described... my previous portage version was 2.0.50b)
In addition to the EOF warning indicated in the README, there is another warning about being unabled to unlink directories because they are not empty.

I suspect this is not an issue, but it makes no difference. Emerging still has the same issues.

After unpacking the portage-rescue package, I ran emerge sync, which appears to work. Anything else I do with emerge fails as previously described. "Emerge -e world" fails as well.

I hate to post what must be a common issue... but I can't find any answers in recent forum posts. I've found my question in google, but no answers...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

Moved from Portage & Programming to Duplicate Threads in favour of 'str' object has no attribute 'insert'.
