I recently purchased a SATA hardrive and wish to use that for my gentoo install.

Once i create the necesary partitions, how should i copy all the files accross, to make sure the permissions are kept?

What would the quickest method be?

I have partition magic if that helps..

Thanks!

Hi
use tar with "p" switch or dar (creating backup also)
Code:

cd /
tar cvp bin | tar xvp -C mnt/disk

this will copy bin directory to /mnt/disk where you have your new sata disk
repeat for the rest of dirs.
The rest depends on your partitoning scheme f.e. separate /usr or sth
cheers

this could work for "data", but could cause problems for booting.
I think "dd" should work better to copy exactly the partitions, except if you're using some filesystems like xfs (use xfsdump then).
And remember to reload grub or lilo unless you switch the disks

Hi.

If you look in this forum or search, you'll find several threads on this. This one is just an example.
