Hi,

I tried to install Gentoo on an Ibook G4 (this is the last generation with 1.33 MHz) and everything was fine except the touchpad/trackpad : I tried a lot of different options in the kernel 2.6.10-gentoo-r8 but is impossible to have it working.

I tried the ubuntu-pcc distribution and get the same error about a device that was not detected :

Code:

Code:

Besided I found that on the apple site :

"Ready to Scroll : Every iBook features a trackpad with customizable scrolling capability. Just drag two fingers over the trackpad to scroll vertically or horizontally, or pan around any active window."

So do you think that it could be possible that this new ibook trackpad is a new one that differs from the old one and consequently does not work yet under linux ?

Does anybody with this new kind of Ibook achieved to have his trackpad working under linux ?

Hi Goldo,

I have the same problem, see https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-368671.html Nothing worked for me, too.

Can you play sound with your built-in speakers? I hear nothing, maybe you can help me :)

Hi regeurk78

Unfortunably I have the same problems than you with the built-in speaker : I can hear sound with speakers (but can not contro volume unless I choose "use software control under xmms for example) but I can not use the built-in speakers for the moment.

According to all the documentation I founnd, everything was supposed to work so as we have the same problems, it must be beacause the hardware changed. I think I will call the apple hot-line tomorrow just to have confirmation that they changed some hardware on this new kind of ibook (trackpad and sound devices) and maybe have some specs or references about the hardware devices but I don't think they will communicate them so easily.

I will take a look on the gentoo-user-ppc.

I am a little bit disappointed but I am confident : it is just a matter of time, let's keep searching :wink:

I wrote my experience on installing gentoo on a new iBook down at the folowing location:

http://users.skynet.be/langewouters/ibook-linux-config.html#audio

I have sound on internal speakers now, and my touchpad works.

Have fun.

Have you tried ifplugd?

I think people will find your notes very helpful.

@thouters

Thanks for the tips I had managed to get my touchpad working using the method you described already but I hadn't thought to try the same kind of thing with the sound driver. Just in case it works for you, I managed to get my bluetooth working by running the following command:-

# hid2hci

Then my bluetooth was recognised and worked well. Last thing to get going now is the wireless but it may be some time. Reverse engineering the driver won't be any fun for those guys.

Have fun!

@deephack1982:
thanks for the bluetooth tip, it seems to be working! (don't have any bluetooth devices though, I can't actualy test it, but all software seems to initialize fine.)

@e-ipi:
ifplugd was what I was looking for, thanks !

@Goldo:
Do you manage to get your iBook to sleep (suspend to ram)?
I don't. Does anyone have any tips that might get it to work?

I'm going to update my ibook page now, bye.

@thouters:

Thank you very much ! The sound and the touchpad work so well now. Thank you !
I did not try to make it sleep yet, I must confess that as the touchpad and the sound were not working, I was quite stucked under Mac Os X...

Does any of you know if the sound problems and other kernel patch problems were fixed in 2.6.14 kernels ?

Is it possible after all to get scrolling in the new touchpads with two-fingers ? I made 3-fingers act as right button click and it's working so-so...

hi!
i have the same problem with the trackpad.
i compiled (with "make") appletouch0.07. now i've in appletouch0.07 dir some files (appletouch.o, .ko, .mod.o..) but i dont know what to do with them!
i tried "modprobe appletouch.ko" but it doesnet work because modprobe
cant file the module (maybe because the module isnt in the right path)
and insmod works (if i give lsmod i see the module loaded) but when i
start x the trackpad doesent work.
do i have to download something help?
could you give any suggestions??

thank you!!

you have to copy the .ko kernel module somewhere into /lib/modules/yourkernel
then run depmod and you should be able to modprobe the module.

better to upgrade to kernel 2.6.14-gentoo though. the linux kernel 2.6.14 includes the appletouch driver!
so you should just be able to enable it in menuconf, rebuild the kernel and run it.
you've got many advantages if you're using a new ibook too, since certain hw (read: sound,video)
is detected better and standby works out of the box.

have fun,
thomas
