Woot!!

I just figured out how to get Limewire to load faster (after much chagrinning and searching these forums and not finding the answer).

Goto Tools->Options->Advanced->Firewall Config and under Router Configuration, select "Do Nothing". This will stop the UPnP Manager from starting which kills the load time for Limewire on Linux for some reason. HOWEVER, THERE ARE CAVEATS. Only do this is you do not have a HW firewall, or if you know how to manually configure said firewall.

In order to get Limewire to work decently, I had to manually configure my router to allow traffic in on port 6346 (or whatever port you have set limewire to communicate on). In fact, I set it up so that the firewall only ever opens this port when it detects an outgoing connection on 6346 (which LW does on startup).

As soon as I turned this option off, LW started very quickly (in a few seconds as opposed to a few minutes). As well, my connection speed went from Excellent to Turbo Charged. Results from searchs seem to come back faster now as well.

By the way, are there any good Gnutella-alternatives to Limewire?

BTW, make sure under Options -> System Tray you choose to shutdown immediately. Or else everytime you close limewire the process will keep running on the background and you'll be forced to kill it manually.

That would require the tray icon to work which it currently doesnt (under gnome anyway). Works if you download and run limewire manually though.
