Oki Ive compiled my kernel manually all seems oki except the fact nvidia doenst loads, nvidia-kernel and nvidia-glx build oki but I cant load it. Modprobe returns
Code:
FATAL: Error inserting nvidia (/lib/modules/2.6.12-gentoo-r6/video/nvidia.ko): Invalid module format

dmesg reports:
Code:
nvidia: version magic '2.6.12-gentoo-r6 SMP preempt k7 4K stack gcc-3.3' should be 2.6.12-gentoo-r6 SMP preempt k-7 gcc-3.3

I dunno what to do. Any ideas?

hm, sounds like your kernel is built with 4k stacks enabled, while your nvidia modules were compiled when your kernel didn't have 4k stacks. Could you try recompiling nvidia-kernel? if that doesn't work, I suggest you disable 4k stacks in your menuconfig and recompile and reinstall the kernel. If that doesn't work.... well, we don't have to think about that right now.

I have already recompiled nvidia, Ive enabled 4k stacks because nvidia was complaining this featrure was missing I dont have this log now if you guys think I need to recompile my kernel I will do it tonight but imho there is something else wrong.

I've never heard anything about the nvidia module requiring the 4k stacks. From the log you gave us, it looks like a version/header mismatch, which is probably because the module is compiled to a different kernel configuration than that actually exist in your kernel. I assume you don't have problem loading any other modules?

The only other module Ive loaded is the one from my nic 8139too that loads fine. Maybe I can go for genkernel but I was looking if I could avoid this solution.

I just installed 2005.1 using genkernel and I get the same errror with a similar dmesg output:
nvidia: version magic '2.6.12-gentoo-r6 SMP preempt k7 4K stack gcc-3.3' should be 2.6.12-gentoo-r6 SMP preempt 586 4K stack gcc-3.3
why would it say 586? Any ideas/solutions?

Moved from Kernel & Hardware to Duplicate Threads in favour of 'modprobe nvidia' fails.
