First of all I am very satisfied with Mac Os but there is something missing in my life and so I want to install Gentoo on my PowerPC. I have searched for information about this content but I still have some questions.

1. Does the Soundcard work? Without Sound it doesn´t make sense for me using Linux /Gentoo. ;(
2. What about the noise? Is there a regulation for the fans and is the noise much increasing comparing to Mac OS?
3. Does the videocard run in software or hardware mode, because there are no ati-drivers for PPC.

Config: 2x 1,8 Ghz G5, Ati 9600 Pro, 1,2 GB Ram

Thnx

Pioneer,
I have Gentoo running on an iMac (G3) and an eMac (G4) I don't have a G5 yet but I don't think it really makes a difference.
I compiled the kernel rather than using genkernel and have audio and X working just fine. Both of them are supported by the kernel so you don't need to load any drivers.
Here's a link to the PPC FAQ that I used to get these working.

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-ppc-faq.xml

I'm not sure about fan regulation or speed control. I'd do some digging in the PPC forum to see if anyone else has gotten that configure or has any ideas about it.

Hi, i've the same machine (1,8 DP, radeon 9600 pro, 1,5 GB RAM) and installed Linux on it 2 times.
I don't got it managed that my Tiger update does not destroy my last installation and so there is currently no Linux on it.
So make backups of your config files when doing a reinstallation of OSX!

At my installation time it does not, but now there is a patch available.
That was the one big thing i've also waited for, so soon i will reinstall linux on my g5.

Yes, fan control is included, but they are louder. i think they are set more conservative for safety reasons.

there is no 3D acceleration. maybe some day from the DRI project. but there is dual monitor support for our graphics card.

... just found this post, in which somebody writes about DRI support for the 9600pro.
Now i can't wait to get my hands on my new linux...

what type of install are you doing? 2005.0, 2005.1? I had nothing but trouble getting the sound to work on my dual G5. What I have found is:

- 64bit install of 2005.0 or 2005.1 I was able to get alsa setup with the latest kernels compiling everything in the kernel, no modules
- 32bit userland install of 2005.1 ppc64 I was able to get alsa setup compiling everything in the kernel, no modules no oss
- pure 32bit install of 2005.0 I was never able to get sound to work

I definetly not an expert though, but i've been fighting with this G5 for a month or so.

Thats a good question. What do you suggest?

For the beginning i will use Stage 3 (with genkernel) and if everything works i will use Stage 1.

I have also been trying to get sound to work on my G5 single 1.8GHZ using alsa. I compiled not as modules all those alsa options into the kernel (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/alsa-guide.xml) and emerged alsa-utils but when I ran alsaconf no sound cards were found..
can someone give an outline of how they got alsa working? I used 2005.0 stage pure 64 bit.
