I am about to buy myself an Apple 15" PowerBook. I will install Gentoo on it, but before I buy I have a few questions:

- Do all programs that compile on x86 compile on PPC?
- Will I meet other problems? Hardware compatibility?
- Will all the hardware work (touchpad, WLAN, Superdrive, Power saving functions etc)?

Thanks.

Firstly rumors are that PB will be updated in Sept ...

I have a PB 15" 5,6 and it works well. I'm very pleased with it. Use amd64 on my desktop, but amd64 laptops were never as nice as the PB's :)

Anyway check here -> http://joh.deworks.net/powerbook/

It should answer your questions.

* CPU - MPC7447A CPU 1.67GHz (needs kernel patch to run at full speed) - Works 4me with latest kernel!
* IDE hard drive
* Ethernet controller (Sun GEM)
* USB
* Bluetooth
* PCMCIA
* Trackpad (with experimental driver, this "works") - Works but can't get other actions to work eg double tap, scrolling.
* Temperature/fan control (needs kernel patch) - Works 4me with latest kernel!
* Battery status
* Sound (needs kernel patch) - Works 4me with latest kernel!
* Firewire (reported to work, haven't tested) - Works 4me with latest kernel!
* Sleep (suspend-to-ram) works on the experimental 2.6.12-rc4 kernel! - Works 4me with latest kernel!

What do you mean by updated? To x86? Or just some other minor HW upgrade?
