I have Gentoo amd64 on a number of servers here, and have decided to try to make a Gentoo install on a old G4 macintosh for some backup storage.

Seems Gentoo PPC has some serious "issues":(

Compling GCC with USE="altivec" seg faults. but worse than that I can't even compile a kernel with IDE support... Altivec I can do without, IDE is kind of important!

Should I give up on Gentoo-sources and go to the vanilla? And if there are game breaking bugs like this why are you using 2.6.12????

The vanilla kernel linux-2.6.12.3 craps out with the same error.

linux-2.6.9-gentoo-r9 works fine, seems 2005.1 is pretty bleeding edge on PPC, maybe a note about that on the FAQ page is order...

Are you sure you checked in 'CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEDMA_PCI=y' ?
when i skipped the option, i encountered the same error with yours.

Cheers
