Found a thread on the rage3d board with which a representative from ATI frequents.

Heres the link:

Hopefully this new driver (slated to come out within the next week or two per previous release trends) will solve alot of our problems!!!

discuss. :D

Please excuse if this was a repost.

tried to emerge 8.16.20, but the drm module doesn't compile on amd64 with kernel 2.6.12-r6. reverted back to 8.14.13.

Im going to wait a day or two, the update is in portage but its masked. I'll wait till it goes to unmasked status and then try it out. I've lived this long without 3d acceleration on my gentoo notebook, whats two days?

Good news, I got it to work. Using kernel 2.6.12-r9...! 8)

Code:
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON X800 XT Platinum Edition Generic
OpenGL version string: 1.3.5272 (X4.3.0-8.16.20)

The key for me was one of two things. I did both an emerge -e system last night, and then this morning I used genkernel to rebuild my kernel. Then the emerge ati-drivers worked! Try kernel first, since it's shorter!

Well, appearantly the verdict on this thing is not so good. The developers have hard masked it now.

For me (using sys-kernel/gentoo-sources 2.6.12-r9) the new driver made FPS about 6% higher on my Radeon 9550GT.
