I did everything just as told in this topic,
but I got the following problem:

Code:
(II) RADEON(0): [drm] added 1 reserved context for kernel
(WW) RADEON(0): [agp] AGP not available
(EE) RADEON(0): [agp] AGP failed to initialize. Disabling the DRI.
(II) RADEON(0): [agp] You may want to make sure the agpgart kernel module
is loaded before the radeon kernel module.
(II) RADEON(0): [drm] removed 1 reserved context for kernel
(II) RADEON(0): [drm] unmapping 8192 bytes of SAREA 0xe20d8000 at 0x380e7000
...
(II) RADEON(0): no multimedia table present, disabling Rage Theatre.
(II) RADEON(0): Direct rendering disabled

I can post the whole /var/log/Xorg.0.log if necessary.
Thanks.

I had the same problem: Is the 'uninorth-agp' kernel module correctly loaded? If not, try a

Code:
insmod /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/char/agp/uninorth-agp.ko

(note the backticks: `...` )

A 'modprobe uninorth-agp' may not help here, because this module name may be aliased to 'agpgart'. Maybe someone has a solution for this problem?

And be sure that you have AGP drivers loaded before the radeon drivers.

Yep, obviously. Just wanted to edit my last post to mention this.

HighOnBonsai wrote:

Where could I remove that alias?

It seems that changing the uninorth-agp entry to /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/char/agp/uninorth-agp.ko in /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6 does not work and the line was automatically replaced by the old one after reboot. (...or had I just forgotten to save?!) But I think, it should not be too difficult to solve this. :-)

HighOnBonsai:

You may have noticed this already - opengl-update has been deprecated in favour of:
Code:
eselect opengl set mesa-cvs

I have DRI working on 2.6.13-rc6 but there's a strange font corruption.
Basically every group of four characters is reversed.
e.g.
"Hello World!" prints as
lleHoW o!dlr

Yes, I realise 4 x sizeof(char) = 32bits, and that this means something is probably not correcting for byte order when printing characters.

I also have XaaNoScanlineImageWriteRect and XaaNoScanlineCPUToScreenColorExpandFill set in my xorg.conf Device section.

Anyone seen a similar problem?
Or have a workaround?

Oh, and sleep isn't working.
AGP seems to be preventing the system from entering sleep.

Did you solve the problem?

I know that this does not help you, but I do not have any of the problems you have (using 2.6.13 [with PCI patch] and xorg-x11-6.8.99.15).

What xorg-version do have emerged? What else did you install since it hasn't been working anymore?

PostPosted: Sat Oct 08, 2005 10:44 am    Post subject: xorg-x11-7 is blocking libdrm Reply with quote

I'm trying to follow these instructions, but I think the status of libdrm in Portage has changed recently. After unmasking libdrm and util-macros, I can only get this far:

Code:
[blocks B     ] <x11-base/xorg-x11-7 (is blocking x11-libs/libdrm-1.0.3)
[blocks B     ] <x11-base/xorg-x11-7 (is blocking x11-misc/util-macros-0.99.0)
[ebuild     U ] dev-util/pkgconfig-0.19 [0.17.2-r1] -hardened 700 kB
[ebuild  N    ] x11-misc/util-macros-0.99.0  34 kB
[ebuild  N    ] x11-libs/libdrm-1.0.3  407 kB

So it seems I would have to remove part of my Xorg install to emerge libdrm. This is with a fairly fresh Gentoo install (2 weeks old), so I can imagine that a lot of other folks will also be having this problem soon. Suggestions? Compile libdrm from CVS I guess, but then who is to say that it won't conflict with my Xorg? Package.masks and blocks usually have SOME reason for their existance, right?

Did you try to emerge x11-drm? libdrm is part of the new modularized x11 and therefore the monolithic x11-xorg blocks this package. My configuration gives me:

Code:

# equery belongs /usr/lib/libdrm.so
[ Searching for file(s) /usr/lib/libdrm.so in *... ]
x11-base/x11-drm-20050807 (/usr/lib/libdrm.so -> libdrm.so.1.0.0)

You will need to add the following line to /etc/make.conf

Code:
VIDEO_CARDS="radeon"

Please tell if this does (not) work!

Christopher

Edit: fixed a typo

According to the ebuild, the x11-drm package is for 2.4 kernels only:

Code:
!!! ERROR: x11-base/x11-drm-4.3.0-r7 failed.
!!! Function pkg_setup, Line 70, Exitcode 0
!!! Please link //usr/src/linux to 2.4 kernel sources. x11-drm does not yet work with 2.6 kernels, use the DRM in the kernel.
!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, NOT this status message.

I have DRM support enabled in my kernel, and a libdrm.a under modules:

Code:
 /usr/lib/modules/linux/libdrm.a

But no libdrm which the linker can find:

Code:

BTW, how did you get a CVS version of this lib? Maybe that would explain why you can use it with a 2.6 kernel and I can't!

What are your ACCEPT_KEYWORDS settings in /etc/make.conf? I guess it is not "~ppc", isn't it? ;-)

x11-drm-4.3.0-r7 seems to be drm for the XFree86 version of X11 - but you have the xorg implementation. It is marked stable on ppc, but x11-drm-20050807 is marked ~ppc (this is the package you need!). You can add the following line to /etc/portage/package.keywords to emerge the newest X11 drm ebuild:

Code:
=x11-base/x11-drm-20050807 ~ppc

Christopher

Edit: BTW a quote of the tutorial (section 0. Prerequisites):

Quote:
you need obviously the "~ppc" keyword in /etc/make.conf

Uhhh, yeah... I knew that! I was just testing you ;-)

I'm off to fiddle with my kernel DRM settings. I'll post back when everything is on track. Thx!

Alright, I'm back. Just a suggestion... I would have saved a lot of time if your tutorial would start with the kernel configuration stuff, and also the x11-drm emerge, since everything after that depends on it.

So now I've reached the end of the tutorial and I still have no direct rendering.

Here's the glxinfo debug stuff:

It seems that X still uses the old driver. Did you modprobe "drm" and "radeon" before starting X?

Code:
# modprobe drm
# modprobe radeon

lsmod on my machine gives me:

Code:
...
radeon                117508  1
drm                    76920  2 radeon
...

Give this a try and report back!

Christopher

Edit: BTW modprobing radeon and drm is not part of the howto - if this points out to be the problem I need to adjust the relevant parts

OK, I just went through the whole thing all over again, and still came out empty handed.

Quote:

Yes, it seems like if loading the drm and radeon modules are essential, they ought to be in the tutorial.

I did notice a couple of (intentional?) omissions or differences between your tutorial and the others you have linked to.

First, here http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/Building#head-9f2bb466fdb1ed8b65bbef5db8aeb5fc8a422045 they say:

Quote:
cd /usr/lib/opengl
mkdir mesa-cvs
cd mesa-cvs
ln -s ../../../local/lib
ln -s ../../../local/include
ln -s ../xorg-x11/extensions
opengl-update mesa-cvs

But I didn't make the ../xorg-x11/extensions symlink as part of your instructions, so I added it later.

I also read:

Quote:
If you set things up differently, a way to check whether you are affected by opengl-update is to strace any OpenGL based program (for example: glxgears) and to see what libGL.so it loads. Despite all symlinks it should load /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1.2. If it doesn't correct the symlinks in /usr/X11R6/lib to point to /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1.2. After that don't run the opengl-update - it will only break things.

So I checked and I did not have a link to /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1.2. (I could not figure out how to get strace to tell me which libGL.so it was using, however). Then I did the following:

Code:
 ln -s /usr/src/r300/Mesa/lib/libGL.so.1.2 /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1.2

but still no dice.

Also, I read here http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_DRI_with_ATi_Open-Source_Drivers that you need to do the following:

Quote:
Next you need to install Xorg. If you are running on older ati hardware (like the Mach64 chipset used in the cards like 3D Rage Pro, etc...), then make sure to use the "insecure-drivers" USE flag. This USE flag is one of the coolest things - it saves you a whole bunch of trouble that you would come into later on. Also, for this to work properly, you need to have "sdk" in your USE flags.

Code:
USE="insecure-drivers sdk" emerge x11-base/xorg-x11

So I've reemerged xorg-x11 with the new flags now as well, and completely rebooted with the new links, drivers and xorg in place.

Code:
# lsmod
radeon                 90244  0
drm                    80408  1 radeon
uninorth_agp           10920  1
agpgart                38844  2 drm,uninorth_agp

But the Xorg log still reports that the old drivers are being loaded.

My symlinks look like this:

Code:
$ ls -alh  /usr/src/r300/Mesa/lib/

I just recognized that you are using 6.8.2 of xorg-x11, did you try xorg-x11-6.8.99? The same result? Of course you have to emerge xorg-x11 with "insecure-drivers".

I will update the tutorial, thanks!

OK, updated x11-xorg.

Close, but no cigar! ;-)

OK, I am back. I have worked out a somewhat "cleaner" way to get DRI working. If this works on your machine (on mine it does) I will happily update the howto :-D

For this you need one of the newest kernels (>=2.6.13 - I am using 2.6.14-rc3). Launch the kernel configuration and activate DRM in the kernel as a module with radeon kernel module:

Code:
-> Device Drivers
  -> Character devices
<M> Direct Rendering Manager (XFree86 4.1.0 and higher DRI support)
<M>   ATI Radeon

Compile the modules and the unmerge x11-drm
Code:
make modules modules_install
emerge unmerge x11-drm

Update the modules configuration:
Code:
# modules-update

We will now compile libdrm by hand (this is still "unclean" because we use the DRM modules of the kernel and libdrm from CVS... :? ):
Code:
cd /usr/src/r300/drm
./autogen.sh
./configure --prefix=/usr
cd /usr/src/r300/drm/libdrm
make && make install
cd /usr/src/r300/drm
make install

Now you should recompile the Mesa DRI stuff:

Code:
cd /usr/src/r300/Mesa
make clean
make linux-dri
cp lib/r300_dri.so /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/dri

Last but not least:

Code:
env-update

Shut down the X server and remove the drm and the radeon modules, then restart the X server and keep you fingers crossed... :-)

I hope this will tame the beast!

'Fraid not. I followed everything as listed with 2.6.13-gentoo-r3.

Code:
# env LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
libGL: XF86DRIGetClientDriverName: 4.0.1 r300 (screen 0)
libGL: OpenDriver: trying /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/dri/r300_dri.so

drmOpenDevice: open result is 4, (OK)
drmOpenByBusid: drmOpenMinor returns 4
drmOpenByBusid: drmGetBusid reports pci:0000:00:10.0
libGL error:
R300 DRI driver expected DRM version 1.17.x but got version 1.16.0
libGL warning: 3D driver returned no fbconfigs.
libGL error: InitDriver failed
libGL error: reverting to (slow) indirect rendering
display: :0  screen: 0
direct rendering: No

But l get this in my Xorg log:

Code:
(WW) RADEON(0): Enabling DRM support

I really suspect something got messed up with the symlinks to the different drivers, but I have no way of telling what!
Or is it possible I really do need a 2.6.14 kernel (which isn't in Portage, so no Gentoo patchset). Geez! Day three and still no joy. Thanks for going over this with me, I really don't know what the problem is here, though...

EDIT: I can highly UNrecommend the 2.6.13-gentoo-r3 kernel. PCMCIA and suspend to RAM are quite broken! I'm back to 2.6.12-gentoo-rc10 until a 2.6.14 comes into Portage. Guess that means I'm off this topic for a while. Thanks again for trying so hard!
