I've noticed that when I do my daily emerge --sync, it reports:

Code:
Please note: common gentoo-netiquette says you should not sync more
than once a day.  Users who abuse the rsync.gentoo.org rotation
may be added to a temporary ban list.

I have three Gentoo machines on my home network, behind a hardware router/firewall. My bet is that all three machines report the same IP, so it may appear that I am doing three syncs a day on the same machine.

Is this a problem?

yes, it is.

You should do local replication, either by using one machine as a local rsync serveror just mounting /usr/portage via NFS on all machines. There is no need for multiple copies.

The disadvantage is I don't want the machines depending on each other. Some are not up 24 hours, etc. I'm supposed to fire up all 3 at the same time and run the sync on the first one then on the other two?

I think I'm going to setup one machine as an rsyncd server as described above so that I am only syncing once to the external mirrors.

You could always download snapshots or use emerge-webrsync.

Learn to sync less often (as in, only when its necessary). Then it won't be such a big deal to have 1 main machine as an rsync server. A local rsync server is easy to setup, and laziness is really the only reason to abuse the once a day policy.

You gotta be caught right up to the millisecond, but don't run all the computers at the same time? ;)

And on that note...

GF15: Rsync etiquette OR How often should I sync? (includes a thread in Chat).
