PostPosted: Fri Aug 19, 2005 7:00 pm    Post subject: boot device not found [SOLVED] Reply with quote

Just got my new laptop :D
trying to install gentoo

reiser 1.0.4 Live CD and it does the usual boot and then it gets
Code:

mounting filesystems
activating udev
Attempting to mount CD :- /newroot/dev/cdroms/*
Attempting to mount CD :- /newroot/dev/ide/cd*
Attempting to mount CD :- /newroot/dev/sr0
No bootable medium found.Waiting for new devices
Attempting to mount CD :- /newroot/dev/cdroms/*
Attempting to mount CD :- /newroot/dev/ide/cd*
Attempting to mount CD :- /newroot/dev/sr0
Could not find CD to boot, somethin else is needed
mount : Mounting /newroot/dev on /dev no such fiel or directory

loading keymaps....
etc
the root block device is unspecified or not detected
Please specify a device to boot , or 'Shell' for a shell

trying from knoppix 3.8.1
it says
Code:

cant find filesystem
Dropping to very limited shell

then
Code:

knoppix#lsmod
sbp2 24456 0 -Live 0xf03a7000
ohci1394 33028 0 -Live 0xf0392000
ieee1394 300600 sbp2,ohci1394, live 0xf03ef000
usb_storage 63296 0  -Live 0xf0381000
ub 18332 0 -Live  0xf005f000
ohci_hcd 21896 0 - Live 0xf0020000
uhci_hcd 31376 0 -Live 0xf00560000
ehci_hcd 31752 0 live 0xf00270000
usbcore 101496 6 usb_storage,ub,ohci_hcd,uhci_hcd,ehcd_hcd, live 0xf003c00

in the screen flashing past as knoppix boots I see

Quote:

Toshiba MK8026GAX ATA Disk Drive

FWIW I dont get a BIOS message either - with no CD in it says
'Reboot and select proper Boot device'

No POST beep
where to go from here ?

Assuming that you have selected it as a bootable device in your BIOS settings then the LiveCD's you've tried so far do not contain a suitable driver for your CDROM drive.

The Toshiba message you refer to, is your IDE drive.

booting from a minimal install CD (checksum verified) it finds the CD drive as it boots
Code:

<stuff about reiserfs,cant find ext3 & ext2 filesystems - unformatted disk >
VFS: cant find a valid FAT filesystem on dev hda
Unable to identify CD-ROM format
UDF-fs: No partition foudn (1)
XFS : bad magic number
XFS: SB valifdate failed
  Vendor: ASUS                Model : SCB-2408              Rev: 1.2B
Type CD-ROM                                                            ANSI SCSI revision: 00
sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 24x/24x writer cd/r xa/form2 cdda tray
Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.20
Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0 at scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0
Attached scsi generic sg0 at scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0, type 5
usb-storage: device scan complete
<stuff about reiserfs/ext3/ext2>
VFS: cant find a valid FAT filesystem on dev hda
Unable to identify CD-ROM format
UDF-fs: No partition foudn (1)
XFS : bad magic number
XFS: SB valifdate failed

then it says it cant find a boot device

telling it to boot from /dev/sr0 doenst work.
Exiting to the shell and listing /dev there isnt a sr0 node

How do i tell it to boot from the CD-ROM , that it has identified correctly , and labelled sr0 , which doesnt appear in /dev
....[/code]

If your CD-ROM is USB, then there is an open bug about that issue and a workaround.
