Goodday, I installed gentoo a while back, and also started the joy of the Windows Worm thread :-). But I would like to dive into the IRC world. It seems very interesting. But what are the benifits, do you really meet people that are online alot. None of my firends would ever get into irc (computer illerates), they are safe with AIM. But some feedback would be cool. Thanks.

Just avoid #otw and #trotw on freenode. Those are evil, evil places

pfff... You could try XChat I think it's OK...
And for server, I only now irc.freenode.net which is the main server for open source software channels.

I hardly ever use IRC so for me it's not worth installing a decent client when a perfectly usable one comes with KDE. (although frankly I'm getting sick of KDE, i'm gonna unmerge it sometime soon)

irssi is a great console based version, if you don't want to install that and use firefox just install chatzilla

I second irssi, it is a really nice program, especially when used in combination with GNU screen.

I've actually recently switched to Gaim from X-Chat as I also use MSN, so it's nice having one client for both protocols.

I had gaim already installed, and it was very easy for logging into irc.freenode.net

I'm with Antimatter, screen + irssi is the way to go.

If you're not familiar with screen, just start with irssi.

Come by #otw on irc.freenode.net some time (ignore papal, it's only #trotw thats evil  ).

Again: Antimatter said it, screen (a real killer app, btw) and irssi! :D

I vote xchat, because I find the tabs useful for my multi-network setup. As for servers, irc.oftc.net is pretty good, I mostly hang in #ck because I take a special interest in the CK patchset. I also go to irc.rizon.net and my own irc server, which is for mostly me and friends, but your welcome to drop in on irc.negativenet.org.

I've been wanting to join the IRC channels as well, I have Gaim, do I need to register a password somewhere though?

Here's a pretty decent IRC Tutorial. You'll also want to register with NickServ, at least on freenode.
