Hello everyone.

I'm not sure if this post belongs under installation instead, but I think that the problem relates to yaboot. I've followed the 2005.1 install handbook to the letter on a G3 Pismo powerbook. I've gotten several kernel panics while booting up, and I'm pretty sure that yaboot (and its conf) are mostly to blame. Recently, the bootup process halts quickly and I get the following error:

Code:
method <draw-rectangle> not found; ihandle=ff9c92c0 phandle=ff894340

Sometimes the error message only appears a few times, though it sometimes repeats indefinitely. Any clues anyone?

I'm probably going to embarrass myself by replying here, and I only do so because I know how lonely it can be to have to deal with your very own yaboot nightmare.

I will just offer a guess and say that it isn't a problem with yaboot per se, but rather some configuration related to all the eye-candy you can enable at startup. Possibly something having to do with the framebuffer stuff?

I mean, what would a routine like draw-rectangle be doing in yaboot anyways?

I recall having all kinds of problems with this stuff, but when running Gentoo on my x86 machine, not on PPC. For PPC, I try to stay on the escalator as much as possible, that is, keep things simple.

So did you do anything special/weird with any of the startup graphics stuff?

Good luck in any case.

Hello, I have Gentoo-ppc working great on my Powerbook G3 Pismo. DRI works fine and dvd playback is smooth with mplayer.

Thank you for your advice, nokilli. When I first posted here, I was unsure if my problem lay in the yaboot configuration or in the open-firmware.

It's great to hear from another Pismo user. I've got a few questions about your yaboot.conf . First off, what sort of drive does this represent? Could I see a partitioning scheme? Does boot= represent /boot (which is the same partition as / on my machine) or does it refer to the apple bootstrap partition on which yaboot resides? Yaboot on my machine seems to demand an ofboot line, with a path consisting of an openfirmware address of the HD.

Here's my yaboot.conf:

Code:
boot=/dev/hda9
device=/pci@f2000000/mac-io@17/ata-4@1f000/disk@0:
delay=10
partition=11
root=/dev/hda11
timeout=30
install=/usr/lib/yaboot/yaboot
magicboot=/usr/lib/yaboot/ofboot

image=/boot/kernel-2.6.12-gentoo-r9
   label=Linux
   read-only

image=/boot/kernel-2.6.12-gentoo-r6
   label=Old
   read-only

macos=/dev/hda13
macosx=/dev/hda12
enablecdboot
enableofboot

Most of the above was generated for me by yabootconfig. First I installed Mac OS X (Panther), letting it set up the disk for me (three major partitions, one each for MacOS, OS X and Gentoo), then I installed MacOS 9, then I did Gentoo. Note that OS X creates a bunch of other partitions to support MacOS 9. I left those alone. When it was time to install Gentoo, I deleted the partition I set aside for Gentoo and then created three partitions, a tiny one for bootstrap, swap, and finally /. /boot is on /.

Really, I just followed the directions, and it all just worked.

Here's my partition map:
Code:
$ sudo mac-fdisk /dev/hda

Now that I'm looking at it, I seem to recall needing to put the Mac partitions at the end for some reason. Anyways, the config you see above works great. I am extremely happy with my Gentoo Pismo.

Yeah, I've tried the automatic yabootconfig, but it complains of a missing component (somthing like nvramupdate) and consequently cannot make any changes to the nvram. My manual changes seem to work as far as getting a kernel, but it never accepts my path to the root partition (hda6). hda1-3 are filled with the apple drivers and such, 4 is my bootstrap, 5 is swap, and 6 is root,boot and the rest of the drive. I installed from the live CD, since I had no OS X to boot from. Sadly the gentoo handbook doesn't give me much advice regarding what to do if the automatic yaboot doesn't work.

It sounds like you might have somehow inherited this Powerbook without having gone through the self-flaggelation all Mac users go through with these machines.

If you are a Mac user, you're going to find the following insulting. That's not my intent. I'm guessing you may have just picked up a Pismo to run Linux and that is your only connection to Mac. So please do the following...

Reset PRAM. That is, reboot, then hold down the Option + Command + P + R keys. Continue holding them down until you hear that very distinctive tone sound off three times. Once that's done, try the install again (I know, groan).

That *might* fix you up. If that doesn't work, you might have to go for a firmware update. You say you don't have a MacOS CD, so this might be a problem. I know Apple makes firmware updates available via their website (check out the support section) but if you don't have MacOS at all then you're not going to be able to run these, at all.

Do you live near an Apple store, or some other venue that might take pity on you and let you use their boot iPod to resurrect your machine?

Otherwise, your final option is to go on eBay or wherever and find a copy of any MacOS that lets you establish a beachhead on the machine to get the firmware up-to-date.

A MacOS CD (MacOS 9 or OS X) would also let you do a clean format and repartitioning, which in your case sounds like it wouldn't be a terribly bad idea.

Speaking of the nvram I remembered there's an option to enable access to it when configuring the kernel. Maybe you missed that and now it's complaining ??
I don't know if this helps but it's the first thing I thought about reading your post.
Good luck.

Code:
$ grep -i nvram .config
CONFIG_GENERIC_NVRAM=y
CONFIG_PPCBUG_NVRAM=y
CONFIG_NVRAM=y

Thanks for all of the advice. I'm new to the mac world, so I didn't consider an nvram reset.

The program in question is nvsetenv. I run yabootconfig

Code:
yabootconfig --chroot /mnt/gentoo
yaboot is the Linux Loader for the PowerPC. yabootconfig sets up your system to boot directly from your hard disk, without the need for a boot CD, floppy or a network boot. Install yaboot bootstrap on /dev/hda4 to boot Linux from /dev/hda6? [Yes]

The partitions mentioned were correct, so I said yes and entered the path for my kernel image:

Code:
Creating a simple /mnt/gentoo/etc/yaboot.conf...
yabootconfig: Cannot find a kernel, please locate one
Enter path to a kernel image: /mnt/gentoo/boot/kernel-2.6.12-gentoo-r6
Enter a path to an initrd image (hit Enter for none):
Running mkofboot to make the disk bootable...
mkofboot: Warning: 'nvsetenv' could not be found, nvram will not be updated
Done

So for whatever reason, 'nvsetenv' was not included in the live CD. Would there be a way to add it so that it would be accessable outside of the chroot (/mnt/gentoo /bin/bash)?

This is the yaboot.conf file that yabootconfig generates:

Code:
boot=/dev/hda4
device=/pci@f2000000/mac-io@17/ata-4@1f000/disk@0:
partition=6
root=/dev/hda6
timeout=30
install=/usr/lib/yaboot/yaboot
magicboot=/usr/lib/yaboot/ofboot

image=/boot/kernel-2.6.12-gentoo-r6
         label=Linux
         read-only

This seems to have not been applied to nvram due to the missing nvsetenv. I try using ybin:

Code:
ybin: Unable to find OpenFirmware path for boot=/dev/hda4
ybin: Pleas add ofboot=<path> where <path> is the OpenFIrmware path to /dev/hda5 to /etc/yaboot.conf

I add "ofboot=hd:4" to the yaboot.conf file and run ybin again and it works correctly, but when I boot up, the system thinks that "root=/dev/hda6" is invalid, and the kernel panics. Fun.

I'll try resetting the openfirmware next, but I was hoping that someone might get an idea from this first.

Is there a way to do what nvsetenv would do from the openfirmware side?

I just changed my bootstrap partition to hda2 and root to hda3 as suggested in the yaboot manual, but still no luck. Now it thinks that root=/dev/hda3 is an invalid path, rather than hda2.

I tried alt+alt+o+f on bootup to get to the openfirmware console, but no luck. Does anyone know any other ways of accessing it?

Stupid me, I decide to install Gentoo on a Power Mac with 4 IDE hard drives, a IDE CDRW, a IDE Combo drive, a Firewire DVD-R and a Firewire HD.

Thank goodness for the Mac OS X Install CD, at least I was able to get back into OS X after having gone through hours of horrible frustration.

However...

I have a fix for the nvsetenv problem with the 2005.1 livecd.

Noting that ybin is a shell script, I simply copied it to /mnt/gentoo/root, where I then edited the PATH variable at the top to include /mnt/gentoo/usr/sbin, so now it finds the nvsetenv that lives on your disk.

The output would seem to indicate that it works fine, however I can't boot Linux... well, I can load the kernel but when it tries accessing the root partition it goes tits up.

I have Open Firmware. Dammit, I don't want to learn Forth just to boot my stupid computer.

I'll try again tomorrow.
